Available and up for your consideration at JLD Auto Group is this 1972 Ferrari 250 GTO Illusion, bodied by Alpha Engineering! Based off of a 1972/73 Datsun 240Z donor car, this "California GTO Coupe" built by McBurnie Coachcraft using an Alpha Engineering body is a unique example, as it is believed to be the only Alpha Engineering-bodied 250 GTO that has been Homologated and Formally Approved by a National Sanctioning Body for Racing. Not many 250 GTO recreations by Alpha Engineering were created, as a result of Ferrari forming a lawsuit against the company for copyright infringement. Thus, Alpha Engineering examples are rarely seen, especially with race approval and a history such as this example. Complete with Sports Car Club of America Homologation Paperwork and Race Logbooks, this example boasts a history participating in the Exhibition Class of Historic Sportscar Racing, Chicago Historic Races, and Classic Racing Car Enthusiasts Vintage Sanctioning bodies' events, having been converted to "Class A Sports Racer" in 1987. As the 1991 Central Division Regional Road Racing Series ASR Champion, this example sports all then-required SCCA safety equipment, with details of its participation and other races in its logbooks.

Powered by a Chevy small-block 355 CID V8, this example is equipped with a rather stout racing setup, with this drivetrain furthermore including a 5-Speed Manual BorgWarner T-2 Transmission and 2000lbs Hays Racing Clutch. A 650 Holley Carburetor caters more towards short tracks, while an 850 Holley Carburetor suits the car more for fast tracks. With a Steel Crank, Rods, Rollers, and Hi-Lift Cam, this full race engine drinks from a 15 gallon fuel cell and Twin Holley 9 PSI Electric Fuel Pumps. An MSD Electronic Ignition, Distributor, and Tunable Advance from the Cockpit are also present, along with a High Capacity "U" flow Aluminum Radiator. A 3.57 Differential with Oil Cooler helps put the power to the ground, while suspension duties are carried out by Coilover Springs, Tunable settings, Camber Plates, and Strut Braces. For extra safety, the Front Brakes are large size Hurst Airheart, accompanying a 3 Compartment 11lb. Halon Fire System, Roll Cage, and two 5-Position Seat Harnesses.

Registered and tagged as a 1972 with the VIN seen in this listing, this example has never been trailered, and has never been involved in any racing incidents beyond the normal signs of competition usage. In addition to the Racing Logbooks included, this example also retains documentation pertaining to its original build at McBurnie Coachcraft, along with a list of its accessories, GTO parts, and a breakdown of its engine build data. SCCA Documentation is also present with the car, along with a set of keys, a 1972 license plate, and some photos of this example competing on the race track. Overall, this is a unique street-legal example of a 250 GTO that's ready to go racing, with a proven history both cosmetically and in its supporting documentation.
